Spanish airline Plus Ultra to operate long-haul flights on behalf of Air Algérie

Spanish airline Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas will operate some long-haul flights on behalf of Air Algérie, according to Spanish media reports published on May 21, 2025.

The Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) agreement will come into effect imminently and have an initial duration of 12 months.

The Spanish carrier will deploy at least one of its Airbus A330-200 aircraft on the Algiers (ALG) to Montréal–Trudeau International Airport (YUL) daily nonstop service, although the two parties may consider extending the agreement to other medium and long-haul routes in the future.

According to the ch-aviation data, as of May 2025, Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas has four active A330-200s. A fifth aircraft of the same type is listed as being in storage.

Plus Ultra mostly uses these aircraft on scheduled services linking Madrid-Barajas (MAD) to destinations in Latin America and Equatorial Guinea. In addition to its scheduled business, ACMI activity has grown of late and currently represents around 20% of its business.

Air Algérie is currently undergoing international expansion that, in the coming months, will see it increase the number of destinations it serves. In the winter season of 2025/26, the Algerian flag carrier plans to launch new routes to several African destinations as well as to Guangzhou (CAN) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL) in Asia.

Air Algérie currently has eight A330-200 long-haul aircraft (of which only five are active according to the ch-Aviation) of the same type as the one it will lease from Plus Ultra. The Algerian airline plans to replace its existing long-haul fleet with eight new A300-900neo aircraft it has on order.

The extra capacity provided by the Spanish carrier will serve as a stopgap solution to keep capacity up until the new aircraft arrive.
